The Universal and the Particular

On what should a study or an application focus - the individual or the group?

This is a question that has dogged the footsteps of developments in the behavioural sciences for a long time.

Focusing on the group might mean differences between individuals are smoothed over and "trends" are taken into account rather than the special features of the indiviudals that compose a group.  In some forms of research, individual differences are actually treated as errors rather than as phenomena to be examined more closely.  Here, the programme could miss the trees for the forest.

On the other hand if focus is brought to bear on each individual in a group, issues pertaining to "scale" may be difficult to address.  The individualised approach could result in ever-expanding constituent groups that perceive themselves as being, different, special, disenfranchised …the list could be as long as there are individuals in a group! Here, the programme could miss the forest for the trees.

Our approach rests on the understanding that every child is unique and has special features that must be identified and acknowledged. Significant variations can exist between one child and the other, even if they are in the same class or school.  Individuals can differ in their pace and style of learning and the manner in which they respond to teaching-learning inputs.

Our approach both to research and practice has been to find the appropriate mix or blend between universals and particulars.  We therefore attempt to identify, acknowledge and integrate:

  • culture-particular characteristics that distinguish one from the other.
  • culture-universal characteristics that unite and offer bridges between differences.
