A nation's greatest resource is her human resource. The Promise Foundation (TPF) was operationalised in 1991 to apply the behavioural sciences and contribute toward the development of this resource.

The Promise Foundation comprises a core group of Psychologists, Social Workers, Special Educators and Teachers, and an international network of specialist consultants, who provide services in the area Mental Health, Education and Potential Realisation.

A large majority of a developing nation's human resource belongs to the underprivileged sector. Our research and research around the world has indicated that people from socially and economically deprived backgrounds, have certain unique mind sets and attitudes, that cause them to remain caught in the cycle of poverty, generation after generation, in spite of various opportunities being made available to them.

TPF focuses on the psychological factors linked to development. We have found that lasting social and economic development can occur when the poor begin to move away from the position of receiver, to a position of self motivated, self-sufficiency. It is vital that issues related to behaviour, attitudes and mind sets are addressed, if true development is to occur. Our programmes therefore emphasise the promotion of emotional well-being and the prevention of psychological and associated problems.

Our target group is children and youth from socially and economically disadvantaged homes, and adults who play a significant role in the lives of these children and young people.

TPF believes that addressing matters of the mind is crucial to changing the life trajectory of the poor toward one of prosperity. Over the 20 years we have developed and standardised psychologically validated programmes for children and young people, that attempt to address their needs in the areas of mental health, education and the realisation of personal potentials.
